A study by a team from The Ohio State University and Ford is providing insight into the deactivation mechanism of rhodium in three-way catalysts (TWC) for automotive emissions control. South Africa is the major source, accounting for almost 60% of the world’s rhodium supply; Russia is the second-largest producer.

In a cost-shared program supported by the US Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and the Ohio Coal Development Office (OCDO) of the Ohio Development Services Agency (ODSA), a team at Battelle is demonstrating a new, hybrid, direct coal-to-liquids process for producing jet fuel using biomass-derived coal solvents.

The testers conducted nearly 150 tests at 28 stations (4 each from 7 different networks) in Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. In 2021, umlaut’s testing team moved to the Northeast and covered 2,100 miles to find and test top sites from 7 networks—through 7 states over 6 days during September 2021.
