The Ford Mustang Mach-E and three other electric or hybrid cars have received a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the Genesis GV70 and G80 EV variants have all been awarded the top rating.
“With these new results, there are now over 100 battery electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen models rated by ANCAP which hold a five-star ANCAP safety rating – providing plenty of choice to consumers across a range of vehicle brands, models and price-points,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E scored high on all four key areas ANCAP focuses on:
- 82% for Safety Assist features
- 92% for Adult Occupant Protection
- 88% for Child Occupant Protection
- 69% for Vulnerable Road User Protection
The lowest was the vulnerable road user protection, which assess the design of the vehicle to minimise the injury risk to a pedestrian or cyclist.
ANCAP also noted that the front structure of the car had a potential high risk to occupants of an oncoming vehicle, and a penalty was applied.
For the Genesis G80 and Genesis GV70, which already had internal combustion engine variants, a few additional tests were done to assess the battery integrity and confirm the same level of safety.
With these two new Genesis additions, the entirety of Hyundai’s luxury car brand’s EV line up is rated 5 stars by ANCAP.
“The excellent 5-star performance of the Genesis model range in ANCAP testing provides the best possible endorsement of the safety technology inherent in our battery-electric powertrains, as we continue towards a sustainable motoring future,” Head of Genesis Motors Australia, Connal Yan said.
The Genesis G80’s scores on the four ANCAP areas are noted below:
- 80% for Safety Assist features
- 91% for Adult Occupant Protection
- 86% for Child Occupant Protection
- 77% for Vulnerable Road User Protection
The G80 boasts a 520km WLTP range, 272kW power and 700Nm torque.
Safety features include 10 airbags and a collection of assist technologies such as lane, break and speed limit assist.
The Genesis GV70 scored slightly less well than the G80 apart from the safety assist:
- 87% for Safety Assist features
- 89% for Adult Occupant Protection
- 89% for Child Occupant Protection
- 64% for Vulnerable Road User Protection
The cheaper G70 has a range of 445km, 360kW power and 700Nm torque. It was also awarded an automotive design award last year.
Safety features in the GV70 include 8 airbags and a raft of assist technologies.
Luxury electric sedans are setting records for safety.
The Tesla Model S scored the highest overall safety score of any vehicle ever tested by Euro NCAP last year under the stricter testing 2022 protocol.
