To recap, BMW will be leasing 500 MINI Es from dealers in New York, New Jersey and Southern California starting some time early in 2009. This is probably because, unlike NiMH batteries, LiIon doesn’t like being fully depleted or fully charged. The web was buzzing last week with stories about BMW’s MINI E.

Plug-In Conversions Corp www.pluginconversions.com of Poway, near San Diego, CA converts the Toyota Prius using NiMH batteries and the EAA-PHEV open source control system, and will provide kits to qualified DIY installers. We believe both NiMH and Li-Ion are ready. This formed the basis for the EAA-PHEV project.

Toyota is using a NiMH battery in the Mirai. In 2016, Air Liquide, in collaboration with Toyota, is targeting construction of 12 stations in five states – New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. The electric traction motor delivers 113 kW (152 hp) and 335 N·m (247 lb-ft) of torque.

Changes include: Completely new battery design. Toyota’s goal was to reduce the cost, weight and volume of the pack from the NiMH system used earlier. Toyota applied experience from that test phase, along with input from participants, to finalize engineering and improve features for the production model.
