OSU study: Low-income, black neighborhoods still hit hard by air pollution

The nation’s air on the whole has become cleaner in the past 70 years, but those benefits are seen primarily in whiter, higher-income areas, said Kerry Ard, an associate professor of environmental sociology at The Ohio State University (OSU), who presented the research. The six-state area analyzed in the Ohio State study, home to many aging and shuttered industrial plants, includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.

New lightweight metals institute will be headquartered in Detroit

The new $148-million lightweight metals manufacturing institute announced in February by President Obama ( earlier post ) will locate in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, officials from the American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute (ALMMII) and the city announced today. ALMMII is a public-private partnership led by Ohio-based manufacturing technology nonprofit EWI, the University of Michigan and Ohio State University.

AEP Ohio is implementing Smart Grid technology over 58 13kV circuits from 10 distribution stations and 12 34.5kV circuits from six distribution stations.

The Ohio State University College of Engineering’s Center for Automotive Research (CAR) conducted testing on CNG, conventional diesel, diesel hybrid and CNG hybrid refuse trucks equipped with the RunWise technology to compare fuel economy and emissions. The tests were conducted in three separate cycles: Low speed based on a rear-loading refuse truck serving a densely populated neighborhood (below 20 mph).

ARPA-E Awards $151M to 37 Projects for Transformative Energy Research

Teaming with Ohio State University are PSRI, CONSOL Energy, Shell/CRI, and Babcock and Wilcox to accelerate this technology towards commercialization and deployment. The Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 37 energy research projects for $151 million in funding through the recently formed Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).
