National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to set up EV charging stations

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to establish several EV charging stations that will help to boost electric vehicles infrastructure in India in the coming days. It has identified more than 650 properties across 22 states with a combined area of over 3,000 hectares to develop highways infrastructure.

It has 94 sites that have been identified along the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, 376 sites along new highways and expressways under construction and around 180 sites with the network of highways across the country.

The government under the Phase-II of the FAME India Scheme aims to support the development of EV charging infrastructure by increasing the capita grant to the organisations to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. Earlier in January in 2020, it was in the news that the government is working on an electric highway between New Delhi and Mumbai at a cost of about Rs 1 lakh crore and has already awarded 60% of the contract said Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.

The Department of Heavy Industry has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for inviting proposals from government organisations, PSUs (state/ central), state-owned discoms, oil PSUs and other public and private entities to build and operate public EV charging infrastructure. This proposal is to build and operate EV charging infrastructure on the Mumbai-Pune, Ahmedabad-Vadodara, Delhi-Agra, Bengaluru-Mysore, Bengaluru-Chennai, Surat-Mumbai, Agra-Lucknow, Eastern Peripheral and Hyderabad-ORR expressways.

ElectReon Wireless building electric vehicle-charging highway in Italy

Recently, ElectReon Wireless an Israeli company is building a 0.6-mile-long (1 kilometre) stretch of electric vehicle-charging highway between Milan and Brescia in Italy. The company is building the charging highway to test the technology for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Let us read more about EV charging highways in Italy.

The trials in Italy will set an example of an innovative electric vehicle-charging road. This highway will recharge electric vehicles as they drive using copper coils on the side of the road to transfer energy directly to the batteries of electric vehicles through magnetic induction.

We are witnessing charging infrastructure worldwide as a big hurdle to mass electric vehicle adoption. But the implementation of this charging technology all over the world will ease the need for charging infrastructure as the owners can comfortably drive without having range anxiety.
