Is this a window into the Mitsubishi Triton’s all-electric future in Australia?

Mitsubishi has pulled the covers off the vehicle that essentially previews its all-electric dual-cab future, unveiling the Triton 1 pickup truck at the Bangkok International Motor Show.

The Triton 1 is also a teaser for the brand’s all-new ute, which will be the first complete redesign of the Triton in around nine years, and which will launch in Australia before the end of the year.

While that model is expected to continue to offer diesel power only, with the brand tipped to forgo a plug-in hybrid powertrain, it will be followed by an all-electric dual-cab variant before 2028.

Whether it will look exactly like this concept — with its swollen flares, all-terrain tyres and bulging bonnet – remains to be seen, but this is at least a taste test of what’s to come when the all-electric era arrives at Mitsubishi.

“The all-new Triton is going through final touch-ups in preparation for its release, as we have performed rigorous endurance tests around the world while also incorporating the know-how gained from rally activities

“With the new vehicle launches as the centerpiece, we will continue our drive toward further growth. Please look forward to the future of Mitsubishi Motors.”

The reveal follows the unveiling of Mitsubishi’s five-year plan, which listed Australia as a core market for the brand, and detailed the Japanese company’s electric vision for the immediate future.

Among the details revealed in that announcement was Mitsubishi’s plan to launch a battery electric pick-up as one of the nine electrified models that will hit the market over the next five years.
