The web was buzzing last week with stories about BMW’s MINI E. To recap, BMW will be leasing 500 MINI Es from dealers in New York, New Jersey and Southern California starting some time early in 2009. Those of us familiar with powerful EVs were curious where the drive train for the MINI E originated.

The test fleet is similar to one conducted by rival BMW AG in the past year with Mini Coopers that were outfitted with electric motors. The 450-car Mini E fleet was meant to gather data ahead of the introduction of high-volume cars. Smart plans to start selling electric cars to the general public in 2012.

Teslas mostly, but the first BMW MINI E was also delivered last week, and we’ll have about 500 more of them on the road within the month. It’s happening. New production electric cars are being delivered at a rate of 100 per month.

I did however find it interesting to find out what the automakers had to promise on the EV front from BMW’s MINI E to Mitsubishi’s iMiEV. It did not have an exciting feel nor were there especially large crowds - especially at the American automaker booths. Our trip was almost over.

BMW’s Mini is rolling out its electric car in three phases. In 2008 the company released a test fleet of 450 Mini-E vehicles and is getting ready to announce its second phase. Bob Lutz, the outgoing vice chairman of GM, has said the company will produce about 8,000 Chevy Volts in 2011.

While Lowenthal ordered a Tesla, he has since opted for the Mini E, an all-electric Mini Cooper made by BMW. When Lowenthal decided to return to business full time, he said, it was a test ride of a Tesla in 2007 that got him thinking about EV charging stations as a prime business opportunity.
