Reva EVs to Be Built in New York State
24 October 2009
Bannon Automotive, LLC, will invest $26.6 million to open a plug-in electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Onondaga County. Bannon will use technology based on that developed by REVA Electric Car Company Private, Ltd., (RECC) to build REVA’s NXR model (earlier post), which was recently introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany.
Empire State Development (ESD) has offered Bannon a $3 million capital grant to proceed with the project.
The NXR is available in two specifications: the NXR City uses a 7.5 kWh lead acid battery pack with a 13 kW, 52 N·m AC induction motor, offering a range of 80 km (50 miles) and a top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). The NXR Intercity uses a 14 kWh Li-ion phosphate battery pack and a 25 kW, 92 N·m AC induction motor, offering a range of 160 km (99 miles), and a top speed of 104 km/h (65 mph). Both models feature a 2.2 kW built-in charger with safety interlock. The car can be fully charged in eight hours from a standard outlet or in one-and-a-half hours from a quick-charge station.
Headquartered in New York, Bannon was founded to design, build and manufacture an affordable plug-in electric vehicle for the North American automotive market. Based in Bangalore, India, RECC was established in 1994 as a joint venture between the Maini Group India and AEV LLC, California USA, to manufacture environment-friendly and cost-effective electric vehicles. REVA, India’s first zero polluting electric vehicle for city mobility, was commercialized in June 2001.
