Congressionally-created Commission Recommends Mileage Tax Instead of Fuel Tax for Transportation Infrastructure Financing

A bi-partisan Congressionally-created commission has recommended a shift from motor fuel taxes to direct fees charged to transportation infrastructure users—i.e., a federal mileage fee—as a way to reform financing of the US transportation infrastructure. From 1980 to 2006, the total number of miles traveled (VMT) by automobiles increased 97%; truck VMT increased 106%. Over the same period, the total number of highway lane miles grew a scant 4.4%.

A new Rasmussen telephone poll found that 81% of Americans oppose an “ increase the tax on gasoline by a large amount ” as a way to encourage the purchase of more fuel-efficient cars. These sentiments remain largely unchanged from nearly two years when 86% said they opposed the idea of raising gas taxes by $0.50 In April 2008, 60% of Americans favored suspending the federal gas tax completely for the summer to offset soaring gas prices. Only 18% supported a mileage tax.

Rasmussen survey finds 53% of likely US voters oppose increase in gasoline tax, even if dedicated only to interstate highways

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 33% of likely US Voters would favor a modest increase in the gas tax even if they knew the revenue would be used only to pay for building, maintaining and repairing the Interstate Highway System. 53% would oppose any such gas tax hike even if the money was dedicated only to the Interstate system. A federal gas tax of $0.184 per gallon is the chief source of money for the Highway Trust Fund.

Ive found it facinating how car commercials changed the main MPG number they promoted before gas went over $4 a gallon as city miles. Now all you hear is highway miles. Considering how much GM plugs we do 80% of our driving in the city, those highway miles dont get much use.
