The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 27 projects for more than $37 million in funding to accelerate the technological and commercial readiness of emerging marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) technologies, which seek to generate renewable electricity from oceans and free-flowing rivers and streams. The four projects will advance marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) energy technologies, which can harness energy from the nation’s oceans and rivers. Portland State University of Portland, Oregon, will develop a multistage, magnetically geared generator with airtight casing to improve the cost, reliability, and efficiency of MHK devices.

The NJ Department of Environmental Protection will replace Tier 1 engines on marine vessels with Tier 4 certified engines significantly reducing particulate matter, NO x and other pollutants. These vessels operate between Atlantic Highlands in New Jersey and terminal locations in New York City.
