Shell has selected Ascension Parish in Louisiana as the location for a potential natural gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will begin moving forward this year with projects that benefit the industry and those who travel throughout St. James and Ascension parishes.

BASF currently produces BDO and BDO equivalents at its sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany; Geismar, Louisiana; Chiba, Japan; Kuantan, Malaysia; and Caojing, China. The starting materials for the production of conventional BDO are natural gas, butane, butadiene and propylene.

The Cardamom field is 225 miles (362 kilometres) south-west of New Orleans, Louisiana, in water more than 2,700 feet (820 meters) deep. The Cardamom reservoir sits beneath thick layers of salt in rock more than four miles (6.4 kilometers) below the sea floor and went undetected by conventional seismic surveys.
