US releases signed MOU with Congo and Zambia to strengthen EV battery value chain

Through this MOU, the United States will support the commitment between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia to develop jointly a supply chain for electric vehicle batteries. Zambia is the world’s sixth-largest copper producer, and the second largest cobalt producer in Africa.

With a functioning AfCFTA, the DRC can receive other upstream mineral inputs needed for lithium-ion batteries—such as manganese from, say, South Africa and Madagascar, copper from Zambia, graphite from Mozambique and Tanzania, phosphate from Morocco, and lithium from Zimbabwe, to name but a few.
