For technical and socioeconomic reasons, 12V lead-based batteries will continue to be the essential mass-market system in Class 1 vehicles for the foreseeable future (and as auxiliary batteries in Class 2 and 3 vehicles). The maximal charge voltage (of the legal limit of 60V) is still being defined by OEMs.

kWh battery isn’t exactly huge either, though the lead acid battery design means it’s probably contributing to around a quarter of the entire vehicle’s weight. Ignoring the whole host of issues such as street legality and safety, don’t forget that you’d have a super desirable vehicle on your hands and no locking doors.

This time, White Zombie is running with A123 Lithium-Ion Batteries instead of lead-acid. An older drag-racing cycle called FrankenDragon based on lead-acid technology.

While the industry is unregulated some of the lads started using electric motors (hub motors) similar to those produced by golden motor and run these pedicabs on the lead acid or gel batteries. It was all fine for about two years until police found out that these are not legal on the public road.

As for warranties , there is legal precedent that original auto warranties cannot be voided completely by modifications — only the part(s) affected by retrofit will have their warranties affected. Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs.
