The Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicles (IRC 30D) tax credit – commonly referred to as the “Federal EV tax credit” has a number of flaws, but one of the biggest is the poorly-designed formula that determines the amount of the tax credit available for each BEV and PHEV sold in the US.

Fisker is delivering the Karma, but not without glitches and its DOE loan is being questioned. Gas prices are at historically high levels, and have become a political football, but haven’t led to a surge in EV purchases. That means the cars on offer have to be purchased as quickly as they are produced. Aptera went under.

After a federal tax credit and state rebate, the price of these cars will come out at around a cool 20k. Others include the Fisker Karma, the Aptera 2e, the Coda sedan, Chevy’s Volt and Tesla’s Model S. The Leaf’s suggested retail price of $32,780 drops to $25,280 after a $7,500 federal income tax credit.

In my previous article, Proposed Changes to the Federal EV Tax Credit Passed by the House of Representatives , I outlined and analyzed 13 proposed changes to IRC 30D (federal EV tax credit). But all of these PHEVs have batteries of around 9 kWh and so they could easily be upgraded to 10 kWh to qualify for the tax credit.
