DIY Electric Car

In just the first month, I have done about 400 miles of driving in this car. I have never run out of juice. The vehicle isn''t going to win any drag races, as it has a purposefully undersized motor; but it keeps up with traffic and gets me to highway speeds in a normal amount of time. Alternatively, I could always add to my LiFePo4 pack, and throw in a more powerful motor. So, this is only my third blog entry, and my car has been done for a month!

The link-10 is pretty good at measuring state-of-charge with Peukert compensation, so I felt good about knowing how much juice I had left. It's 17 miles one-way with charging at work. I did what many EVers do: I pulled over, waited 15 minutes and then drove the remaining mile home. After waiting the 15 minutes, the car felt a bit better, but after 1/2 mile, it slowed to a crawl again, so I put on my hazard lights and got home.

General Motors pulled back the curtain on a Chevy Volt SUV at Auto China 2010 ( here ) this week. Because it doesn’t cut through the wind with the same efficiency as its older sibling, electric range drops nearly 25% (down to 32 miles on a full charge vs. 40 for Volt #1). Even so, the gas engine can take you the next 300 miles when the juice runs out. It is estimated the top speed would be somewhere around 100 miles per hour.

When the juice from the larger pack is used up, Spirit reverts back to driving like a regular Prius hybrid. This translates into gas mileage of up to 100 miles per gallon, Asher said. On a recent trip from Bisbee to Phoenix, the Spirit averaged 56 miles per gallon, he said.“ Electric motors are more reliable than internal combustion engines,” Verdugo told his students.

For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. With a 55KWH battery, range is only 157 miles.

BYD , for examples, says their 60 mile range-extended vehicle can add 30 miles of range in ten minutes. Therefore, until we get quick-charge batteries -- based on new breakthroughs, Ill take a WAG and estimate that we will have real 5-minute quick-charge batteries in perhaps 10 years -- we are likely to get our juice mostly from our home chargers. I dont like the idea of leasing a battery pack, or project Better Places pay for however-so-many miles on a plan and whatnot.

" In other words, General Motors is going to lose its shirt until the Volt establishes itself in the marketplace. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. General Motors has sought $10.3 Ive found it facinating how car commercials changed the main MPG number they promoted before gas went over $4 a gallon as city miles.
