Jeep is aiming to become ‘the global zero-emission SUV leader’ with new EV model offensive

Jeep has announced its plan for a comprehensive revamp of its model range to become what it calls “the leading electrified SUV brand in the world”. Three fully electric SUVs are now due to be released across North America and Europe by the end of 2025, with the first arriving next year in the shape of the Jeep Avenger.

The Avenger is the first of the Europe-bound EVs within Jeep’s model plan and is due to reach here in 2023 and takes the form of a compact SUV to compete with the likes of the Vauxhall Mokka-e from under the same overarching Stellantis Group umbrella.

It is Jeep’s first battery electric car, following the brand’s various forays into PHEVs with the likes of the Compass and Renegade, among others. Jeep is targeting a range of around 250 miles with the Avenger – which is based on the STLA Small platform. As well as this, decent ground clearance, breakover and approach angles which should make it useable off-road.

Power will come from 94bhp motors in various configurations, with two- and all-wheel drive layouts available via twin or even quad motor setups. Jeep is also promising a “modern and technologically advanced interior, with plenty of space for people and cargo”, whilst its European focus is evident as the Avenger will be produced at Jeep’s plant in Poland.

The debut will be at the Paris Motor Show in a month’s time, whilst it’ll be available to buy in early 2023.

Other models in the pipeline

Two more EVs have been unveiled within Jeep’s model plan, both of which have a North America focus – a market in which Jeep is aiming for 50 per cent of sales to be EVs by 2030. For context, Jeep is aiming to be 100 per cent EV by the end of 2030 in Europe.

The first of these is called the Recon and is designed as a rugged, capable off-roader with the capability to traverse the legendary Rubicon Trail with enough charge left at the end to drive to town and recharge. It will feature Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management, e-locker axles and under body protection, as well as the option to turn it into an open-air experience with an electric roof, removable doors and glass.

Initially to be sold in the US market with production beginning in 2024, Jeep will expand sales into Europe thereafter.

Another model which will start off in the US in 2024 is the Wagoneer. Created as a premium SUV for the road, albeit with off-road capabilities, it is likely to be a natural challenger to EVs from the likes of Audi, Genesis, BMW and the like.

Jeep is promising a sleek, aerodynamic car with a targeted range of 400 miles and power in the region of 600hp, dishing up 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds. A new LED-lit grille, alongside that aero exterior, will define the Wagoneer, which will make its public debut in 2023.

“Driven by the success of our electrified 4xe portfolio in North America and Europe, we are designing and developing the most capable and sustainable Jeep SUVs to date, on our path to becoming the leading zero-emission SUV brand in the world,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO. “This is a forward-thinking strategy to help ensure millions of Jeep fans around the world continue to have a planet to explore, embrace and protect. Electrification is great for our brand, making it even more capable, exciting, sustainable and fun.”
