The FCA Melfi, Italy plant is beginning preparations to produce the Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) scheduled for market launch in early 2020. The Renegade PHEV will be produced alongside the Renegade and 500X full combustion engine products that are currently produced at the Melfi vehicle assembly plant.

The first of these will be a 2012 Toyota Prius minivan, variously called the Prius Alpha or Prius Verso, though we don't yet know exactly what model name it will carry in the U.S. Toyota announced a year ago that it would apply the Prius model name not only to the current five-door hatchback, but to other hybrid vehicles as well.

To survive, help is needed from Italys Fiat but, as negotiations with the Italian automaker bog down and the two week deadline to hammer out a partnership approaches, the companys future - as well as its aspirations for an electric hot rod - are increasingly in doubt.
