BYD & Geely Shine in Q1 BEV Sales In Israel
The transition to electric mobility is well underway, as shown by rising market shares in several markets around the world. One of the markets that I like to follow closely is Israel. This is a market dominated by imports and therefore can give us an indication of how things will look like in the new battery-electric vehicle sales sector in the near future in other markets of a similar size.
Q1 sales figures for electric vehicles have been coming in from all corners of the world, and we are starting to see Tesla and BYD record impressive sales figures in several markets. In the UK, the Model Y was the top selling vehicle overall for March and it was also the fourth bestselling vehicle in Q1 across all drivetrains, selling 9,953 units. The BYD ATTO 3 has recently been launched in the UK, so we should expect to get a better look at its sales performance at the end of Q2. In Thailand, the BYD ATTO 3 was the best-selling vehicle Q1 and BYD has already shipped over 10,000 units of the ATTO 3 since it was launched. I was therefore very curious to see how these two giants are doing in Israel.

In Q1, the BYD ATTO 3 topped the charts in Israel with 5,852 registrations, followed by several models from Geely that managed to register 3,102 units all in total. In third place was Hyundai with 1,752 registrations, followed by Tesla with 1,369. Mercedes-Benz rounded up the top 5 with 493 units. It’s interesting to note that of the brands in the top ten, five of them are Chinese. SERES, Skywell, and Aiways are the other Chinese brands in the top 5. Outside the top 10, Leapmotor also makes a notable appearance with 204 units. South Korean brands are also doing well in Israel with Hyundai, KIA, and also Genesis making a notable appearance at number 11 with 252 units registered in this past quarter. Overall, 16,500 BEVs were registered in Israel in Q1 along with 5,808 plug-in hybrids.
On the plug-in hybrid side, KIA topped the charts with 2,505 units, followed by MG with 1,622 units. Interestingly, Mercedes-Benz was the only brand that registered diesel plug-in hybrids with 58 units. Toyota, which had 242 BEV registrations in the quarter, also had 93 plug-in registrations, and of course Toyota topped the plugless hybrid category with 6024, followed by Hyundai with 3550 and Suzuki with 3051.
BYD is doing very well with essentially one model in the market, the ATTO 3. BYD also has more affordable BEVs such as the Dolphin, as well as the upcoming revamped e2 and the Seagull in China. It would be interesting to see how well these new models would do in the Israeli market if they were to be introduced there in the near future. Geely is also adding some more affordable models in China and it would also be interesting to see how well they would do there if they are added to the Israeli market. The SAIC, General Motors, and Wuling joint venture has the new Bingo coming out soon in China. Perhaps this could also be a model they could introduce in Israel once they activate an export program for this model.
