BMW has been producing internally-developed test cells in small formats for some years already with the aim of identifying the ideal cell structure from the myriad materials and variants. In future, cobalt will be sourced directly from mines in Australia and Morocco, and lithium from countries including Australia. The BMW Group has pooled its years of experience with battery cells and extensive knowledge in the field in a new Competence Center in Munich.

New investment in wind, solar, and other clean energy projects in developing nations dropped sharply in 2018, largely due to a slowdown in China.

Skeleton Technologies joins Flying Whales program to develop next generation of heavy-lift, large-capacity airships

The international shareholding company is leading a consortium of about 30 companies and labs to cover the research and development, engineering, industrialisation and manufacturing phases of the program. European ultracapacitor manufacturer Skeleton Technologies will join French firm Flying Whales’ program to build a 60-ton Large Capacity Airship (LCA60T, for the global transport market.

UNICEF: 300M children worldwide breathing air exceeding WHO pollution guidelines by 6x or more

Almost one in seven of the world’s children, 300 million, live in areas with the most toxic levels of outdoor air pollution—six or more times higher than international guidelines set by the UN’s World Health Organization (WHO)— according to a new UNICEF report. The findings come a week ahead of the COP 22 in Marrakesh, Morocco, where UNICEF is calling on world leaders to take urgent action to cut air pollution in their countries.

IEA: Estonia is pioneering technologies for more efficient and cleaner use of oil shale

An article in the latest issue of IEA Energy: The Journal of the International Energy Agency reports that Estonia, which has the most developed oil shale industry in the world, is collaborating in pursuing wider use of oil shale in a cleaner, more sustainable manner. There are also significant reserves in Jordan, Morocco, Sweden, Syria and Turkey. Eesti Energia started its international oil shale activities in 2006, and has oil shale operations in Jordan and the United States.

Mercedes-Benz introduces its mid-size pickup truck: the X-Class leans on diesel

Mercedes-Benz developed the X-Class with the changing requirements of the international pickup markets in mind. Due to very specific market requirements, for example in Dubai and Morocco, the 122 kW/165 hp X 200 gasoline model is only available as a left-hand drive vehicle with rear wheel drive. Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new pickup truck—the first from a premium manufacturer—the X-Class.
