Two years after unveiling a concept version of its first compact luxury car, Infiniti unveiled the real thing at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 2017 Infiniti Q30 takes Nissan's luxury brand into a new area of the market, with a little help from Mercedes-Benz.

That's because the Q30 shares its underpinnings with the European-market Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback, as well as the CLA-Class four-door, and GLA-Class crossover.

The styling is all Infiniti, though, hewing fairly closely to the original concept.

The roof line is very coupe-like, but the Q30 also seems to stand a bit taller than a typical hatchback.

In addition to its shared platform, the Q30 will also share powertrains with compact Mercedes models.

In the U.S., the sole powertrain will be a 208-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission and front-wheel drive.

This is the same hardware used in the U.S.-market Mercedes CLA and GLA.

In Europe, buyers will have a wider variety of options, including multiple gasoline and diesel engines, an available six-speed manual transmission, and all-wheel drive.

U.S. buyers looking for all-wheel drive may have to wait until an expected QX30 crossover derivative appears.

On the inside, the interior features a similar wavy design theme to the exterior, with some high-end touches like contrasting stitching and a suede-like material called Dinamica.

A full array of electronic safety features will be available on the Q30, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, park assist with Around View Monitor, high-beam assist, and moving-object detection.

The Q30 goes on sale in Europe this fall and will arrive in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2016, likely as a 2017 model.
