Leading truck manufacturer Volvo Trucks is setting the standard for the transition to all-electric heavy transport hauling.

With one charging break along the route, Volvo’s heavy-duty electric truck impressively operates continuously for 12 hours and has a capacity of 74 tons.

Volvo Trucks: Always In The First Place

Since its founding in 1927, the company has been paving new roads for the transportation sector. Volvo Trucks fueled the advancements in the industry’s safety and sustainability with inventions like the three-point safety harness, distinctive designs to maximise efficiency, and the first completely integrated sleeper compartment.

Starting The EV Revolution In The Hauling Industry

Volvo first started series production of electric trucks in 2019. Since then the company has continued to develop and improve electric trucks by releasing models in new categories with higher power and longer ranges. The FL Electric was Volvo’s first completely electric commercial vehicle launched in 2019.

With six EV truck models now in serial production, Volvo Trucks offers the most diverse range of options. Volvo received its largest order to date from Hocim to deliver 1,000 electric trucks by the end of the decade,as a result of the company’s long vision about electrification of the hauling and transportation industry.

By delivering three large electric Volvo FH trucks in June Mattson Keri in Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo reached yet another significant milestone. The electric truck has two 32-meter-long trailers that can each carry 74 tonnes of weight.

Two quick 180 kW chargers placed at the Arendal depot of Volvo quickly charges the electric truck using green power. The truck will also travel the 43 miles (70 km) from Gothenburg to the city of Bors in the near future.

Volvo has been running tests on one of their trucks FH Electric 6X4 which is known as a High-Capacity Transports (HCT) test in container traffic for the past several weeks.  HTC allows for a larger load to be transported per vehicle.

Numerous other HTC initiatives are now underway across Europe with the goal of lowering transportation costs and minimising environmental effect.

A Briefing About Volvo’s Electric History

One of the first truck brands in the world to begin serial manufacture of electric trucks is Volvo Trucks. The Volvo FH, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FE, Volvo FL, and the Volvo VNR are the six electric truck models that today make up the product line.

One of Volvo Trucks’ six completely electric heavy truck types, the Volvo VNR Electric was created specifically for the North American market. Beginning of sales was in December 2020.

The first Volvo VNR Electric had a maximum driving range of 240 km (150 miles). THE  new improved class 8 VNR has been introduced with a range of up to 440 km (275 miles) and higher energy storage of up to 565 kWh. Also the new model has enhanced battery design and a new six battery package option helping to increase the range.

The 250kW charging capacity of the new Volvo VNR Electric allows for an 80% charge to be completed in 90 minutes for the six-battery package and 60 minutes for the four-battery version, which decreases the amount of time needed to charge the vehicle.

Volvo has delivered over 5,000 electric trucks in 40 countries since 2019. As a trend setter in the industry, the company is aiming to increase the electric vehicle share to 50% of their total sales by 2030.

Conclusion

Volvo’s efforts in the electric truck industry is a testament to its pioneering spirit and dedication to shaping a cleaner, greener future for transportation. By combining innovation, practicality, and a commitment to environmental sustainability, Volvo is leading the charge in the electrification of heavy-duty trucks.

As the world gets more and more serious about reducing carbon emissions, Volvo’s electric trucks are driving change on the road and inspiring other manufacturers to follow suit.
