Roskill has so far recorded the closure of 21 operations as a result of the outbreak, including: Vale’s Voisey’s Bay and Glencore’s Sudbury in Canada; Ambatovy in Madagascar; Coral Bay and Taganito in the Philippines; CTT in Morocco. China is the world’s leading consumer of cobalt, with more than 80% of its consumption being used by the rechargeable battery industry.

First, environmental plant closures in the raw material coal needle coke industry hampered the production of graphite electrodes. The focus for new natural graphite development remains in Africa, where almost 1 Mtpy of additional concentrate capacity has the potential to come online by 2027 with projects in Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, and Tanzania. China remains the center of the graphite industry.

To do this, it has put together a project consortium that covers the whole biomass production chain, including researchers, companies in the (bio)chemical industry and European organizations. The project partners come from 14 countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Madagascar, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Work has begun on a new EU-funded project to improve the performance of Europe’s biorefineries.
