Biosynthetic motor oil receives highest industry performance certification; demonstrates improved fuel economy

Biosynthetic Technologies has received ILSAC GF-5 certification on both SAE 5W-20 and 5W-30 grade passenger car motor oil (PCMO) formulations using its Biosynthetic Base Oil. ILSAC GF-5 represents the latest performance standard set by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC). These formulations have also been certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to exceed requirements of the most recent service category issued by API’s Lubricants Group—the API SN “Resourcing Conserving” designation.

A key component of the ILSAC GF-5 designation is demonstrated fuel economy improvement. The fuel economy attributes of Biosynthetic Base Oil is further demonstrated by the results of a recent Mercedes Benz M111 Fuel Economy Test in which a Biosynthetic SAE 5W-30 motor oil formulation achieved a 3.05% fuel economy gain compared to the industry reference oil.

Biosynthetic Technologies worked with Infineum, a global leader in the manufacturing and marketing of lubricant and fuel additives, to formulate and test these PCMO formulations. As part of this collaboration, these certified PCMO formulations will be made available to marketers interested in selling ultra-high-performance Biosynthetic motor oils.

Engine test data show these Biosynthetic motor oil formulations achieve piston deposit and wear protection ratings among the highest of any PCMO products currently available in the market, demonstrating that Biosynthetic Base Oils provide performance benefits not attainable with petroleum-based products alone, the company said.

In the past, environmentally friendly lubricants have faced performance questions. We now have extensive, proven results that these Biosynthetic oils can exceed the industry’s toughest standards, as well as the most challenging environmental standards. Furthermore, we now have third-party validation from the oil industry’s most trusted certifying bodies that Biosynthetic Base Oils offer the cleanest engine possible and a cleaner environment.

Biosynthetic Technologies holds a broad intellectual property portfolio, which currently includes 13 issued patents and more than 30 pending patents with a broad range of claims directed to novel biosynthetic molecules, biobased lubricant formulations, catalytic processes and methods of manufacture.

The company’s core technology is exclusively licensed from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), which originally developed and patented this new class of molecules while exploring new uses for crop oils.
