Hyundai opens EV floodgates: More Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 stock coming to Australia as brand vows to get “aggressive” in electric vehicle battle
Hyundai says deliveries of its Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 will at last pick up pace this year, with the trickle of supply to improve as the brand plans to get “aggressive” in the electric vehicle space in Australia.
Cleary keen to tap into booming demand for electric vehicles in Australia (the Tesla Model Y was the country’s second-best-selling vehicle last month, while the Model 3 was the best-selling passenger car), Hyundai says its stock of Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 will improve in the last six months of 2023.
A Hyundai Australia spokesman told EVcentral that over 300 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 were in the country and available to order through its website.
We were also told around 1000 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6s were arriving in the next three months.
In further good news to perspective buyers, the full range of Ioniq models fall under this tax year’s increased Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold.
The improved supply will allow the brand to get “aggressive” with its electric flagships, as it looks to take a more dominant position.

“It’s still a little bit of a challenge for us on the supply side, so we’ve got some work to do there,” says Hyundai Australia’s chief operating officer, John Kett. “The real positive news for us is that access to the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 will most certainly ease in the second half of this year.
“So you’ll see us be a little bit more clearer, a little bit more aggressive, in the way in which we’re presenting that brand as we look to go forward.”
The Ioniq 5 launched in Australia via series of online “drops”, with demand far outstripping supply and stock selling out in minutes. But the improved situation has seen a more regular ordering process take over, with customers now given expected delivery dates.
All in all, the Ioniq 5 has so far managed 448 sales in Australia this year, while the Ioniq 6 has recorded 300 sales.
