The Honda EV+ used the same Panasonic EV-95 NiMH battery modules with an active system, and those packs didn't last as long. At least with NiMH, Toyota's passive system worked out better in the real world. There is minimal loss in cabin space and a large surface below helping dissipate heat, which is an issue with NiMH, too.

Again this is true as the batteries used were originally NiMH but are now progressing to lithium-ion with some even able to hit 0-60mph in four seconds. The NiMH batteries used in most hybrid cars currently are fully recyclable. Fiction - Hybrid car battery toxicity is environmentally detrimental.

Because of Hondas different architecture (the engine runs whenever the motor runs), aftermarket conversion of Hondas are unlikely. We believe both NiMH and Li-Ion are ready. The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid.

The high demand for the Honda Civic hybrid tell us its at least $3,000. They are converting up to 40 15-passenger Mercedes commercial vans into PHEVs, with some vehicles using NiMH and others advanced lithium-ion batteries, plus diesel and gasoline engines. These are "features" -- and no one asks about the payback.

Lithium-Ion batteries share many characteristics with NiMH. Honda Insight, Civic and Accord use an entirely different design: the electric motor never runs without the gasoline engine running at the same time. What about battery safety? Ive heard lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous if they overheat.

E-Flex is technically a hybrid with two power units, but unlike the ToyotaPrius, Honda Insight and various Lexus models, the engine in the Volt doesnot drive the wheels, it simply acts as an emergency generator to rechargethe batteries. How far hybrids will be encouraged in the new government initiative remains tobe seen.
