Sales of hybrid-electric vehicles in the UK have steadily risen over the past five years, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. From 2007 up to the end of the first quarter of this year, almost 100,000 hybrid vehicles have been sold in the UK; the market share of hybrids has almost doubled, from 0.7%

From the sale of the first RX 400h in 2005 through to the end of November this year, Lexus has sold more than 506,000 of its hybrid vehicles. In 2005, 26,000 Lexus hybrids were sold; by 30 November this year the annual total was at 113,000. Today, hybrids account for about 25% of all Lexus sales. RX 400h/450h.

Can you think of a desirable hybrid? We can think of a few, particularly when it comes to some of the hybrid luxury sedans on the market, such as the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid or Lexus GS 450h, and there are a few on the horizon too, like the Acura NSX plug-in hybrid supercar.

Hybrids are great. Okay, perhaps not the last one, as thrills are conspicuously absent from many hybrids on the market today. Economical, clean, soothing, relaxing, quiet, thrilling. However, some carmakers are changing that image with powerful and luxurious models--and Lexus is one of those carmakers.

Reported sales of hybrids. Reported sales of light-duty hybrids in the US dropped 29% by volume in February year-on-year to 16,020 units. The decline in hybrids was less than the 41% decline in the overall light-duty vehicle market for the month. New hybrid sales represented 2.3% of all GS models.
