A Sandia National Laboratories project team, including a number of industry partners, is designing and building a cold-ironing fuel cell system that will be deployed in the Port of Honolulu in 2015. Though the study had to make some assumptions (the purchase price of hydrogen, for instance), it determined that Young Brothers could save fuel, energy and, at the same time, enjoy greatly reduced emissions, if it switched primarily to fuel cells.

Eligible projects included those that replace, rehabilitate, lease, and purchase buses and related equipment as well as projects to purchase, rehabilitate, construct or lease bus-related facilities, such as buildings for bus storage and maintenance. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities will receive funding to purchase battery electric buses, associated charging infrastructure and a back-up generator to maintain bus service in a disaster situation.

The US Department of Energy delivered more than $47 million in funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for eight projects to further smart grid demonstration projects in seven states. The $47 million in new Recovery Act awards will support existing projects that are advancing demonstration-scale smart grid technologies. Smart grid supports EV and PHEV deployment through real-time pricing structures and bi-directional metering.

Another three are on the West Coast and in Hawaii: Seattle (4), Portland (5), and Honolulu (6). Honolulu, with 26 quick chargers, has one of densest charging grids in the US. Proton OnSite has been awarded a purchase order from HydraFLX Systems Ltd to install a hydrogen generator at the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) facility outside Honolulu, Hawaii. It will be powered by a combination of solar and grid power. The station is being upgraded in cooperation with the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies (HCATT) and the Air Force Research Laboratory.
