Last week's New York Auto Show had a number of green vehicles, but there were relatively few new production models there that truly qualified as green.

So a new hybrid model of Nissan's seven-seat crossover Pathfinder comes as close as we can get.

It's likely to be considered by a number of families looking for a large comfortable crossover who want the boost in gas mileage--15 to 25 percent--offered by the mild-hybrid system in the Pathfinder, an all-new vehicle last year.

The smaller of two corporate hybrid systems, the one in the Pathfinder has a 15-kW (22-hp) electric motor sandwiched between a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the company's Xtronic continuously-variable transmission (CVT).

Total power output of the combined system is 250 hp, just 10 hp less than that of the 3.5-liter V-6 fitted to the non-hybrid Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder Hybrid competes against the Toyota Highlander Hybrid--and a new 2014 model of the company's largest hybrid vehicle was also launched in New York.

We're curious as to whether Nissan's seven-seat hybrid family transport will fall short against the new hybrid Highlander, which offers electric-only acceleration and travel at lower speeds and under light loads.

Nissan expects the families who pick the hybrid Pathfinder to do so not because they want to say they're driving a hybrid, but because the payback period on the more expensive hybrid powertrain could be as low as three years.

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid will be available this fall at Nissan dealers.
