Last week Tesla revealed that its new Model S Plaid EV could reach a speed of near 200 MPH and reach 0 to 60 MPH in 1.99 At the Plaid launch event Elon Musk said that the Plaid was “faster than any Porsche, safer than any Volvo.”. Excuse me if I don’t get all giddy with excitement.

After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. All the commercially available freeway-capable (70 mph) EVs are priced way out of reach for the average consumer.

It took me 30 seconds to get up to 60 mph. I'm not sure how much current these golf cart batteries are designed for. I think people experience cognitive dissonance when they see a little red Porsche sports car being the slowest car on the road. This makes synchronization of the gears rather difficult.

They are either glorified golf cart city cars like this one or they are only for the very wealthy like the Tesla. With a top speed of only 65 MPH and a 100 mile range, the Think Global will remain a niche City Car for conspicuous green consumers who aren’t concerned about safety. Electric cars a still a joke.
