Remy to Supply HVH250 Electric Motors to Advanced Mechanical Products for EV Conversions

Remy International, Inc. and Advanced Mechanical Products, Inc. (AMP) have signed a letter of intent for a potential long-term electric motor supply agreement. AMP will use the Remy HVH250 electric motors in their custom electric vehicle conversions.

AMP has developed an all-electric high performance, high efficiency drive train for installation into select modern passenger vehicles. The first two vehicles available for AMP conversions are the GM Saturn Sky and the GM Pontiac Solstice. The end product is an all-electric vehicle with a range of up to 150 miles per charge.

AMP uses a Li-ion pack from an as-yet undisclosed supplier. The pack carries a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Individual cells can be replaced on an as-needed basis without replacing the entire battery pack. AMP expects the battery packs to retain 80% of their capacity up to 100,000 miles.

A GM study on bar wound stators—similar to the Remy HVH technology—compared to wire wound stators found a greater than 20 °C temperature difference between the two technologies in an EV application over an aggressive drive cycle (which is substantially more demanding on motors than a hybrid application). By comparison, a full hybrid application yielded only a 5 °C difference between the two motor technologies over the same drive cycle. GM presented the study at the recent SAE 2010 Hybrid Vehicle Technologies Symposium.

The HVH250 is an advanced electric motor/generator for electric and hybrid vehicles based on Remy’s patented High Voltage Hairpin (HVH) technology that provides improved motor performance and cooling effectiveness. The torque and power density allows for improved fuel economy, increased range in all-electric drive mode and the potential for a smaller internal combustion engine in hybrid vehicles.

AMP will purchase standard Remy HVH250 components and design and develop their own motor housing and interface components to fit the needs of the specific vehicle being converted to electric. Remy HVH electric motors have been designed to reduce customer development costs (tooling and non-recurring engineering) as well as the production costs associated with low-volume custom designs. This new approach to product design is also improving speed to market and reducing cost barriers to customers in the emerging hybrid and electric vehicle marketplace, Remy says.

The HVH250, in its High Torque, High Flow Cooling permanent magnet version, offers up to 160 kW peak output and 440 N·m of peak torque from a 43 kg package operating at 650 VDC.

The HVH250 Standard version delivers 82 kW peak output and 325 N·m peak torque from a 33.5 kg package operating at 320 VDC.

160 KW in 43 Kg! This is only second to the Tesla Roadster power density. I can just imagine what a Prius would drive like with one of these motors and some A123 Systems lithium batteries. The more competition the better!
