Worldwide sales of Toyota hybrids surpass 9 million units; Prius family accounts for 63%

Toyota Motor Corporation announced that the cumulative figures for global sales of its hybrid vehicles reached 9.014 million units as of 30 April. This latest million-unit milestone was achieved in just nine months.

The Prius family still accounts for the majority of sales: 5.691 million units, or 63% of the total global cumulative number. (Prius: 3.733 million; Prius α, Prius v, Prius +: 0.634 million; Aqua, Prius c: 1.249 million; Prius PHV: 0.075 million). As of the end of April 2016, Toyota is selling 33 hybrid electric passenger car models (HEVs) and one plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model in more than 90 countries and regions.

In 2015, Toyota added a hybrid model of the popular minivan, the Sienta and began selling the latest hybrid icon: the fourth-generation Prius. Overseas, Toyota introduced the Corolla and Levin hybrid models in China—with locally-produced hybrid systems—and added a hybrid model of the RAV4 to its ever-increasing hybrid line-up.

Toyota is working to expand its lineup of hybrid vehicles even further and will work to contribute to the environment by achieving annual sales of 1.5 million units, and cumulative sales of 15 million units by 2020.

Toyota calculates that as of 30 April, the use of Toyota hybrid vehicles in lieu of conventional vehicles of similar size and driving performance has resulted in approximately 67 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions―believed to be a cause of global warming. Toyota also estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved approximately 25 million kiloliters (6.6 billion gallons US) of gasoline compared to the amount used by gasoline-powered vehicles in the same class.

Toyota launched the Coaster Hybrid EV in August 1997 and the Prius in December of the same year.

Toyota has positioned hybrid technologies, which encompass all of the component technologies necessary for the development of environment-friendly cars and which facilitate the use of different fuel combinations, as core environmental technologies for the twenty-first century.

What a success story this is! If the current rate keeps up, Toyota's HEVs/PHEVs sales will total over 10,000,000 by 31 Dec 2016?

Wonder when Toyota will start to mass produce BEVs? Is it a question of improved lower cost quick charge batteries for extended range?

What happened to the Toyota's SS battery?

Nirmalkumar

Why electric range of prius small and why toyoto is not able to produce big range electric car like like tesla, with toyotos long experience and technology.even i road is ideal solution for city ride but toyoto is just not mass producing it.

HarveyD

Why Toyota is so reluctant to get into the BEV race is a very good question.

After almost 20 years mass producing 8+M HEVs and a few years experience with improved lithium batteries and PHEVs, their next move may be with BEVs with 2X or 3+X batteries?

It seems to be a well guarded secret?

Roger Pham

Why is Toyota so reluctant to get into the BEV race?

Because BEV's are still more or less compliance cars that are not profitable right now. Tesla is still not profitable, while other auto makers are subsidizing BEV's with profits from other cars. Still requiring $7,500 tax credit to sell BEV's.

DaveD

Roger, Tesla is not profitable because they are expanding production for upcoming cars. They now make profit off every Model S that rolls off the line.

Excellent Achievement Toyota.
Best part is selling the last 1 million units in just 9 months in the face of low gas prices.
If Toyota can sell 9 million hybrids, then other companies could have sold at least 1 million if they launched a Prius type dedicated Hybrid Hatch which is spacious as well.

Hope Hyundai sell a lot with their upcoming Ioniq Trio. Any idea as how many hybrids were sold by Honda. They sold their first million in 2012-09.

Here is the development of Prius over the years.
Model Years : Interior Space : Mileage
1998 - 2002 : 101 cu. ft. : 40
2003 - 2009 : 112 cu. ft. : 45
2010 - 2015 : 116 cu. ft. : 50
2010 - 2015 : 118 cu. ft. : 52 / Two-Eco Trim : 120 cu. ft : 56

Anxiously waiting to see the news of 10 million Hybrids sold.
All these hybrids would have cut down the pollution drastically while reducing the oil imports as well.
This should also be one of the reasons that OPEC has cut the oil prices.
