Nations agree on global, legally binding treaty on mercury emissions: Minamata Convention on Mercury

At the conclusion of the International Negotiating Committee on Mercury ( INC5 ) meeting in Geneva ( earlier post ), nations agreed on a global, legally-binding treaty to prevent mercury emissions and releases. The negotiations were initially looking to set thresholds on the size of plants or level of emissions to be controlled.

The declaration is not legally binding and is focused on a global level. Governments in emerging markets and developing economies: Dominican Republic; Ghana; India – two-wheelers and three-wheelers constitute more than 70% of global sales and more than 80% in India.
