IISD Releases Five-Part Series of Reports on Removing Fossil Fuel Subsidies

The International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Geneva-based Global Subsidies Initiative ( GSI ) has issued a five-part series of reports into how nations might remove fossil-fuel subsidies, on the eve of a meeting of G20 finance ministers in Washington this week. It focuses in particular on France, Ghana and Senegal, as well as drawing from case studies of other countries and previous work that examines the reform of energy subsidies and price subsidies.

Volkswagen & Siemens launch joint electric mobility pilot project in Rwanda

The pilot project, which will form part of Volkswagen’s operations in Rwanda, was officially announced today by Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Group South Africa and responsible for the Sub-Sahara Africa Region, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda, Right Honourable Dr. Edouard Ngirente. UNEP: export of used cars to developing world creating significant environmental problems

UNEP, with the support of the UN Road Safety Trust Fund and others, is part of a new initiative supporting the introduction of minimum standards for used vehicles. The initiative’s first focus will be countries on the African continent; a number of African countries have already put in place minimum quality standards—including Morocco, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Mauritius—with more showing interest in joining the initiative.

Global Bioenergy Partnership publishes report on 24 sustainability indicators for bioenergy: electricity, heat and transport

The report features 24 sustainability indicators, each developed with three parts: a name, a short description, and a multi-page methodology sheet that provides in-depth information needed to evaluate the indicator.
