Cumulative global sales of Toyota Motor Corporation’s (TMC) hybrid vehicles has exceeded the 7 million unit mark as of 30 September, reaching 7.053 million units. This latest million-unit milestone was achieved in the fastest time yet for Toyota, taking just nine months.
As of this month, Toyota sells 27 different hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in hybrid model in more than 90 countries and regions. The Prius family with all its variants accounts for 67.8% of all TMC hybrids sold through 30 Sep: 4.778 million units.
From the beginning of this year to the end of 2015, Toyota is planning launches of a total of 15 new hybrid vehicles, including the "Voxy Hybrid” and “Noah Hybrid” (Japan only) launched in January; the Lexus “NX 300h” launched in July; and the Lexus “RC 300h” to be launched in the second half of October.
Toyota will continue augmenting its hybrid lineup and increasing the number of countries and regions where it sells hybrid vehicles.
Toyota calculates that as of 30 September, Toyota hybrid vehicles have resulted in approximately 49 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions than would have been emitted by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar size and driving performance. Toyota also estimates that its hybrid vehicles have saved approximately 18 million kiloliters (4.755 billion gallons US) of gasoline compared to the amount used by gasoline-powered vehicles of similar sizes.

Geographic distribution of cumulative hybrid sales between the largest three markets. Total global figures contain some 373,000 sales from markets other than Japan, North America and Europe. With 3.349 million units, Japan accounts for 50% of the hybrid sales among the top three markets, followed by North America (2.559 million for 38%) and Europe, with 772 thousand and 12%.
Will 10+M be enough for most posters to admit that TMC's hybrids are a huge success?

Judging the numbers, it seems that Toyota should better focus resources on making Priuses of different sizes and styles, while stop making hybrid versions of other ICEV models. Hybrids are a special class of vehicle that can only be optimized via a clean-sheet design approach. The money saved will allow some price lowering on the entire Prius line which will boost sales much higher.
