All too often the prices paid by transportation system users are markedly less than the costs of providing the transportation services they use (including pavement repair)—much less the total social costs (including traffic congestion and pollution). Such a move to a mileage tax does not currently have the support of the White House.

A national phone survey by the Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) found that a majority of Americans would support higher taxes for. The survey results show that very low support levels for a one-time gas-tax increase or a new mileage tax can be raised by modifying how the tax is structured and the way it is described.

Ive found it facinating how car commercials changed the main MPG number they promoted before gas went over $4 a gallon as city miles. By the time he finally, and happily, got rid of it, he said the friggin piece of junk used more gas than his small Honda because tow trucks get crappy milage. The management at GM are liars.
