ARPA-E selected the following 12 teams from universities, national laboratories and the private sector to address and remove key technology barriers to EV adoption by developing next-generation battery technologies: 24M Technologies will develop low-cost and fast-charging sodium metal batteries with good low-temperature performance for EVs.

High-energy nickel (Ni)–rich cathode will play a key role in advanced lithium (Li)–ion batteries, but it suffers from moisture sensitivity, side reactions, and gas generation. Nickel offers relatively low cost, wide availability and low toxicity compared to other key battery materials, such as cobalt.

Skyonic’s electrolytic carbon capture technology, SkyMine, selectively captures CO 2 , acid gases and heavy metals from flue gas. The captured pollutants are mineralized into solid products, including sodium bicarbonate, which are stored, transported and sold as safe, stable solids.

By conducting more heat away from the valve head, the new seat materials reduce the temperature in the hottest part of the combustion chamber and lower the gas temperature at the end of the compression stroke: improving knock resistance and allowing a wider range of ignition advance to enable optimisation of combustion.
