The directive covers four main air pollutants: sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs) and ammonia (NH 3 ). These pollutants can cause respiratory problems, contribute to the acidification of soil and surface water, and damage vegetation. These pollutants contribute to health problems and can also lead to economic losses and environmental damage. The pollutant for which most exceedances were registered was NO x.

None of the EEA scenarios considered delivered the targeted reduction in transport GHG emissions. Based on analysis of long-term trends, a new European Environment Agency (EEA) report calls for a clear vision defining Europe’s transport system by 2050 and consistent policies to achieve it. On its tenth anniversary, the EEA’s TERM report presents an overview of transport’s impact on the environment, built on an analysis of 40 policy-relevant indicators.
