SUV registrations totalled 556,400 units during the month, up by only 0.7% But the most worrying result from June was not the continuous diesel decline, but the slowdown in demand for SUVs. The first is that the poor conditions of the wider market are finally impacting SUVs, which are usually more expensive than regular car types.

Ford has cracked the door wide open for the new Explorer EV to come to Australia following the decision to axe the Escape SUV locally. It also means Ford doesn’t have a competitor for some of the top selling vehicles in the country, including the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Nissan X-Trail.

The Mazda6 is changing name, going electric and will be on-sale in China before the end of 2024. Revealed today at the Beijing auto show, the Mazda EZ-6 will be offered as both a battery electric vehicle and as a plug-in hybrid. The Mazda6 is currently offered for sale in Australia only with ICE powertrains. 2025 Mazda EZ-6.

Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. There are more than twice as many SUV models that achieve 25 mpg (9.4 mpg, while Mazda had the second largest increase of 2.1 l/100 km) or more in MY 2013 than in MY 2008.
