Based on the success of two Irizar 100% i2e electric buses that have been operating in London since June 2015, London’s largest transport operator, Go-Ahead, is incorporating the buses into its fleet and has signed an agreement with Irizar that includes service and maintenance. The first of these two units was delivered to TFL (Transport for London) as part of the “Clean Bus Summit” which took place on 29 June 2015 at London City Hall.

Four British-built Optare MetroCity single deck electric buses are currently being trialed on route H98 in London, which operates between Hayes and Hounslow. Optare is part of the Hinduja Group, a British bus manufacturer based in Sherburn in Elmet, North Yorkshire; the buses are part funded from the Department of Transport’s (DfT) Green Bus Fund. Transport for London (TfL) and bus operator Go-Ahead London have begun a trial of the city’s first two battery-electric buses. Routes 507 and 521 will trial the new buses as the technology is particularly suitable for busy short commuter services which operate between Victoria, Waterloo and London Bridge stations. In addition to the two buses in this trial, six additional electric buses will be introduced into the TfL fleet in early 2014.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, launched a £86.1-million (US$111 million) program to retrofit around 5,000 older buses with a new exhaust system that will upgrade the vehicles to Euro VI emissions standards. By September 2020 the entire bus fleet will be at least Euro VI standard, with the emissions from the retrofitte buses cut by up to 95%. Currently 700-800 new low-emission buses are being introduced to the London fleet every year, with diesel-only buses being phased out.

The Board of Transport for London (TfL) approved a production order for up to 600 of New Bus for London vehicles over the next four years. This will create the largest fleet of hybrid buses in Europe, according to TfL. The 600 buses represent a 200% increase in the current hybrid bus fleet which is set to grow by a further 180 vehicles already on order. The introduction of the 600 buses will reduce CO 2 emissions in London by around 20,600 tonnes a year.

Dearman flags diesel loophole in new London T-Charge anti-pollution scheme
