This marks the first time that all-electric transit buses will be purchased and placed into Metro revenue service. Metro’s Advanced Transit Vehicle Consortium (ATVC), a partnership with LA City, LA County and South Coast Air Quality Management District, will initially purchase five low-floor, 40-foot all-electric buses.

The new Indy fleet vehicles will include 100% electric models, such as the Nissan LEAF, as well as plug-in hybrid models like the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford Fusion Energi, which offer extended range. The City will replace 100 vehicles by the end of this year and 425 vehicles by the beginning of 2016.

Initial sales of the 2014 Cadillac ELR extended range electric luxury coupe ( earlier post ) will begin in January in all major US metropolitan areas. With an all-electric range of about 35 highway miles (56 km), and a total range in excess of 300 miles (482 km), the ELR offers fuel economy of 82 MPGe, Cadillac estimates.

The school district is purchasing 86 Blue Bird Propane Vision school buses, and hopes to convert more of their diesel fleet to propane buses in the future. This new autogas bus offering expands Blue Bird’s propane autogas portfolio, which also includes the 70-gallon standard and 100-gallon extended-range autogas tanks.
