Eligible projects included those that replace, rehabilitate, lease, and purchase buses and related equipment as well as projects to purchase, rehabilitate, construct or lease bus-related facilities, such as buildings for bus storage and maintenance. The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities will receive funding to purchase battery electric buses, associated charging infrastructure and a back-up generator to maintain bus service in a disaster situation.

LA Metro to purchase up to 25 new BYD electric buses as part of $30M pilot project

This marks the first time that all-electric transit buses will be purchased and placed into Metro revenue service. Metro’s Advanced Transit Vehicle Consortium (ATVC), a partnership with LA City, LA County and South Coast Air Quality Management District, will initially purchase five low-floor, 40-foot all-electric buses. After an initial period of testing and evaluation, Metro may then choose to purchase up to 20 additional buses.

Indianapolis plans to add 425 PHEVs and BEVs to municipal fleet by 2016

The new Indy fleet vehicles will include 100% electric models, such as the Nissan LEAF, as well as plug-in hybrid models like the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford Fusion Energi, which offer extended range. Each gasoline powered sedan in Indy’s fleet would have cost taxpayers approximately $9,000 per year over the next decade, including purchase, fuel, maintenance and insurance.

New Flyer unveils next generation of electric Xcelsior CHARGE transit bus; LA Metro contracts for up to 100 units

The Xcelsior CHARGE extended range configurations allow for up to 600 kWh battery capacity, delivering realistic transit ranges of more than 200 miles on a single charge based on Federal Transit Administration test protocol. Batteries are available in high-energy version for extended range or high-power for rapid on-route charging and continuous operations. The contract includes 35 firm orders with options to purchase an additional 65 buses.

Most participants noted that developing fuel cell bus maintenance facilities was not as challenging as expected. Key challenges to commercialization revealed by the demonstrations were: Vehicle Range. The most significant challenge was range. Diesel buses typically operate for 18 to 20 hours per day, over a range of about 186-217 miles (300-350 km), using one tank of fuel. Operating range of HICE buses is also limited, requiring buses to be refueled mid-day.
