SwRI opens new high-horsepower dynamometer facility to service marine, rail and petroleum industries

The test cell’s support equipment (conditioned combustion air, cooling system, fuel mass flow measurement and exhaust system) was designed to comfortably support 7,000-hp engines. SwRI established a separate locomotive engine facility in 1990 in a San Antonio railyard to facilitate work on engines installed in locomotives.

Although particle sensors are expected to become a critical OBD component for detecting particle emissions failure from downstream of an exhaust DPF, it is critical that these sensors prove they can perform their tasks before they are launched on a commercial scale.

CRC ACES Phase 2 report finds emissions from modern heavy-duty diesels well below required levels

The Phase 2 ACES study was conducted by the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, under the oversight of the CRC. Emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were also significantly below required 2010 levels: 97% and more than 99.9%, respectively. In 2010, EPA’s stringent NO x limit of 0.20 g/hp-hr in 2010.
