Recent research cited by the EPI suggests that around five million people die prematurely every year due to air pollution, accounting for approximately one in every ten deaths annually. Of the emerging economies, China and India rank 120 th and 177 th respectively, reflecting the strain population pressures and rapid economic growth impose on the environment, note the researchers. Substantial populations still suffer from poor air quality, most notably in India, China, and Pakistan.
