Study finds children’s exposure to urban air pollution results in early hallmarks of Alzheimer’s

Green Car Congress

A study by researchers from the US, Mexico and Canada has found that children’s urban air pollution exposures result in systemic and brain inflammation and the early hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The study found that clinically healthy children who live in a polluted environment and who also carry a gene—the apolipoprotein ?4

Researchers find magnetite nanoparticles similar to those from traffic pollution in brain; possible link with Alzheimer’s

Green Car Congress

Professor Barbara Maher, from Lancaster Environment Centre, and colleagues (from Oxford, Glasgow, Manchester and Mexico City) used spectroscopic analysis to identify the particles as magnetite. Particles smaller than 200 nm are small enough to enter the brain directly through the olfactory nerve after breathing air pollution through the nose.

Study of lead isotopes provides insight into aerosols transport from Asia to US

Green Car Congress

About a third of the airborne lead particles collected at two sites in the San Francisco Bay Area came from Asia, a finding that underscores the far-flung impacts of air pollution and heralds a new way to learn more about its journey across vast distances. We can use this information to guide the development of particulate transport models.
