Volkswagen confirms EA288 diesel engines designed for EU5 and EU6 not affected by defeat device software

Volkswagen confirmed on Thursday that no software constituting an improper emissions control defeat device as defined in law is installed in vehicles with EA 288 EU5- or EU6-engines in the European Union. Consequently, new vehicles of the Volkswagen Group offered within the European Union with those engines comply with legal requirements and environmental standards.

Volkswagen Group had earlier confirmed that new EU6-compliant vehicles offered within the European Union fulfill all legal requirements and environmental standards. (Earlier post.)

Volkswagen AG is systematically reviewing this issue worldwide and is looking to engineer a holistic solution for complying with the respective valid standards.

Work on the technical solutions detailed in the plan of measures (earlier post) is currently proceeding at full speed. Remedial action on the vehicles will begin in January 2016 at no cost to customers. The measures are currently being developed for each affected series and each affected model year and will first be presented to the responsible authorities. Volkswagen will subsequently inform the owners of these vehicles over the next weeks and months.

Other recent developments in the emissions scandal include:

  • Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA) has decided that Volkswagen should recall a total of approximately 8.5 million vehicles in Europe (EU28 markets), including some 2.4 million vehicles in Germany, with the EA 189 diesel engines with the software defeat device. (Earlier post.)

  • Volkswagen Group Hong Kong (VGHK) said that none of the passenger cars sold in Hong Kong or Macau are affected, because the EA189 engine has never been imported to the local market. For Commercial Vehicles, Volkswagen Caddy is the only model imported to Hong Kong and Macau that is affected.

A service campaign will be carried out with a total of 384 units of affected Caddy (model year between 2011-2015) and any affected customers will be informed individually in due course. VGHK is temporarily suspending the sale of the Caddy until the service campaign is carried out on all affected vehicles.

  • In Belgium, some 320,000 affected vehicles—models with the EA 189-type diesel engine and a displacement of 1.2 l, 1.6 l and 2.0 l, of the brands Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Audi, SEAT and Skoda—will be recalled.

  • Swiss VW distributor AMAG said the registration ban has been lifted for VW commercial vehicles that were not affected by emissions manipulation, and that new vehicle models of Transporter, Amarok (Generation 2) starting in 2012, and Crafter can be registered again in Switzerland.
