At the Milan International Cycle and Motorbike Show, Peugeot is presenting a three-wheel drive hybrid scooter concept: the HYbrid3 Evolution. The scooter delivers 36 kW (49 bhp) of power, with fuel consumption of 2.0L/100 km (118 mpg US) and 48 g/km of CO2 in the combined cycle.

The HYbrid3 Evolution is a roofless—and higher-powered—version of the HYbrid3 compressor, presented at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The HYbrid 3 Evolution features electric motors in each of its two front wheels and a naturally aspirated engine at the rear. There are no mechanical connections between the front and the rear, with everything controlled electronically (“by wire”), which works in favor of the vehicle’s compact size.

The new 300 cm3 supercharged gasoline engine providing the concept’s rear wheel drive has an output of 30 kW (41 bhp). The two 3kW electric wheel motors are powered by lithium-ion batteries which can be recharged by an energy recovery system active during deceleration and braking.

The HYbrid3 Evolution can be driven in three different modes:

  • in electric only mode (start-up, low speed and deceleration, offering a range of up to 10 km);

  • in gasoline only mode, at stable speed on the open road, when the gasoline engine attains its optimal efficiency;

  • Gasoline engine/electric motor combined: as required by road conditions; and during phases of acceleration for extra power (“boost” function) and grip, when the power can attain a maximum of 30 + (3x2) = 36 kW (49 bhp). These characteristics allow acceleration and in-gear acceleration equivalent to that obtained with a single 500 cm3 engine (the Peugeot Satelis for example).

The HYbrid3 Evolution also uses a stop & start system that places the engine on standby when the vehicle is at a standstill (at traffic lights, a stop sign or in traffic jams) or when the vehicle is being driven in electric mode.

The front suspension, consisting of deformable parallelograms (i.e. wheels that incline) has at its center a transverse damper for optimal driveability and stability. The suspension assemblies are positioned on the wheel hub.

The brakes incorporate an ABS system coupled with a linked integral braking system (PBS) which acts simultaneously on the rear wheel and the two front wheels. The braking system operates by means of three ventilated discs and, in addition, via the front electric motors which in this way recover energy to recharge the batteries. This assembly (3 wheels + electric motor braking) also makes it possible to reduce the braking distance by around 30% compared to a two-wheel scooter equipped with traditional brakes.

Peugeot says that this hybrid technology and its original implementation is one of its technologies of the future, that could be applied in different forms with different naturally-aspirated engines, different electric solutions and on any type of vehicle, even the smallest models.

From 2011, the HYbrid4 3008 will be the Group’s first vehicle to be sold with an HDi engine at the front and an electric motor at the rear.

I said months ago to build hydrostatic green motorbikes and cars and trucks instead of costly and limp batteries. And i said too, to start selling home refueling small high-tech hydrostatic or electric windmills, solar panels and anerobic garbage digesters for free fuel at home to help disperse 100% of petrol usage.

Interesting, with an aerodynamic / waterproof fairing / rollcage and highway cruising speeds it could become a popular commuting vehicle.

Its a naturally aspirated supercharged engine eh?

Since the advent of high power magnets, There is no reason not to have an alternator incorporated as part of the engine flywheel as they almost always had them before. An inexpensive tiny regulator can charge the batteries and run the electric motors when the gasoline engine is operating most efficiently. Charging can also be selected as a very complex function that is managed by a one euro cost micro controller including charging while stopped. Two thin wires from the engine to the battery will not add more than a few tens of grams. The charging regulator can be kept to a kilogram and also used as a plug in charger.

The manufacturer of this vehicle wishes to mislead the public by catering to its belief that high horsepower is necessary and highly needed in such a small vehicle. The average horse power used can be estimated crudely from the gasoline consumption. All automobile companies should be required to state the horsepower used by their vehicles to move at 100km/hr in still air on a level smooth road. This vehicle is badly engineered if it requires more than 10 hp. One gallon of gasoline(35KWH) used going 120 miles in two hours with an assumed engine efficiency of 25 percent equals 5.9 average horsepower. A more likely engine efficiency of %20 yields 4.7 horsepower. Small engines seldom have even this high of a level of efficiency. It is quite clear that the electric motors can be used most of the time when the engine would not be as efficient driving its own wheel, if the motors themselves were also not over rated. A hard total enclosure would likely reduce the fuel consumption. ..HG..

Henry,
Regarding the latest prototype of the VW 1-litre
http://www.worldcarfans.com/109091421718/vw-l1-concept-officially-revealed-in-detail
I estimate that, for going at 65 MPH (104.6 km/hr), with 2 persons inside, it only uses about 5.4 HP
Air drag: 3.94 HP
Rolling Resistance: 1.42 HP
Total weight: 530 kg (with 2 persons)
CdA: 0.199 sq. metre

Imagine this contraption doing 65 miles an hour on the highway and hitting a puddle of water or a patch of ice.

The lawyers representing the injured parties would have a field day.

Hybrid technology implementation of the future?

No.

Contraption.

Yes.

macroshaft

I would prefer some sort of roof over the machine.

Imagine this contraption doing 65 miles an hour on the highway and hitting a puddle of water or a patch of ice.

And why would this be anymore of a problem than it is with the motorcycles we currently have?

ToppaTom

These are not just for motor cycle riders - who know about water, sand, etc.

These are to be driven by commoners and geeks.

ai_vin

In my day the commoners rode bicycles and the geeks had scooters.

36KW on a 300cc 'bike' with a weight of 2-300Kg? plus similar passenger weight is not unreasonable on todays roads. acceleration being a safety consideration in accident avoidance. Compare to 51KW @ 130Kg plus 1 only (no passenger seat) on a sporty 1/2 liter two wheeler.

This chassis configuration including abs and traction control and lean angle geometry is proving popular especially in the higher powered versions amongst cycle test riders.
one 3KW hub motor is applicable to a speed limited electric bicycle.

Dangerous discovery from the latest issue of ECN:

A central tenet of “climate change” dogma holds that increased emissions (2 billion tons a year in 1850 to 35 billion tons a year now) leads to greater CO2 levels in the atmosphere. But a new study from the University of Bristol could shake up traditional assumptions. The study suggests that CO2 levels have remained constant since 1850.

According to the University, “The results run contrary to a significant body of recent research which expects that the capacity of terrestrial ecosystems and the oceans to absorb CO2 should start to diminish as CO2 emissions increase, letting greenhouse gas levels skyrocket.” In fact, the trend in the airborne fraction has only been 0.7 ± 1.4% per decade (essentially zero).

Dr Wolfgang Knorr based his data on empirical records and historical data extracted from Antarctic ice, rather than quasi-scientific climate models (upon which “climatologists” have based their career). Knorr found that CO2 levels have remained constant at about 50%.

This isn’t a slam-dunk case against “climate change.” There’s still the issue of the “other 50%.” To put it simply, 50% of 35 billion is still greater than 50% of 2 billion. But if true, this new data calls into question the “emergency” of global warming. Activists like Al Gore and farcical movies like The Day After Tomorrow predict rapid climate change, predicated on the diminishing capacity of ecosystems to absorb CO2. Such a reduced capacity would cause an exponential increase in CO2 levels (leading to Hollywood-style doomsday scenarios).

Note to alarmists: start looking for a new job.

Tires like those wears faster. Something like 14 000 kms to 25 000 kms.

A 3 wheeled scooter is as opposed to a motorcycle practically as stable as a car.

Many Europeans use a 2-wheeled scooter to commute and yet there are less fatal trafic accidents in Europe than in the US.

An electric bicycle typically has a power rating of 0.25 kW.

And there's no GHG-alarm. In fact his year during the Obama adminstration there were 38% less wind turbines installed than last year during the Bush adminstration.
awea.org/newsroom/releases/10-20-09_AWEA_Q3_market_report.html
Also, solar hot water capacity added (2006):
China: 80.2%
USA: 0.5% (no alarm either)

Renewable energies and efficiency measures do reduce the unemployment rate, reduce the price of fossil fuels and the dependence on fossil fuel imports and the cash flow to unstable countries. So don't worry if they also happen to reduce CHG-emissions.
