Ford Transit passenger van sales up 30% through June; outselling minvans

Ford reports that sales of its full-size Transit passenger vans are up 30% year-on-year through June, partly driven by growing numbers of large families are turning to the Transit instead of minivans.

According to Ford, Transit vans outsold every other van in the United States over the first half of 2016, including minivans.

Overall, Ford commercial van performance grew 17% in the first half with a total of 128,378 vehicles sold—largely driven by Transit’s 36% gain in the same period with 78,480 sold. Total Transit sales increased 19% in June, with 14,437 sold.

With these numbers, Ford’s commercial vans represented 24% of the 531,500 Ford trucks (F-Series, E-Series, Transit, Transit Connect, and Heavy Trucks) sold in the first half of 2016. Total 1H truck sales were up 12.5% year-on-year, and represented 39% of all Ford vehicles sold during that period. SUVs accounted for 32% and cars for 29%.

Overall, Ford’s monthly van sales grew 14%—the company’s best commercial van sales since 1978—with 24,404 sold.

Ford Transit is available as a cargo van, passenger wagon, chassis cab and cutaway. The flexible Transit can be ordered with a choice of three roof heights, two wheelbases, three body lengths and three engines, for a total of 64 configurations from Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant.

The passenger wagon comes with seating for eight, 10, 12 or 15 passengers. The wagon is available with a 3.7-liter V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6; or 3.2-liter Power Stroke I-5 diesel.
