Honda Motorcycle is all set to foray into EV segment next year

Honda Motorcycle a leading and well-known two-wheeler manufacturer and Scooter India (HMSI) is all set to launch its first electric product in India in the next financial year.

HMSI President, Managing Director and CEO Atsushi Ogata said the company has decided to foray into the segment after discussing with its parent firm Honda Motor Company in Japan.

He said that the company is committed to launching EV products within the next financial year. The customers have started using the electric vehicles for shorter commutes in the cities and for longer commutes, people are still using internal combustion engine two-wheelers he said.

“Some customers are using electric two-wheelers for very short commutes or very flat street conditions in big cities. So such customers have started to consider such options but still, I think major customer segments are preferring to keep our existing line-up because still in front of EV products, existing ICE engine specs have a lot of positive points,” Ogata stated.

“So far I don’t believe there will be a drastic shift from ICE engines to the EV. We are considering it because we have the know-how of EV technology for the last several decades, so why not consider it for the Indian market.”

Ogata said that the company is not officially started testing for its products but it said that it will start after Diwali and it also said that it will set up the feasibility study officially at our dealerships.

Last year, the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) had announced that it is going to start testing an e-scooter. It will test an electric two-wheeler on Indian roads.

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, HMSI, said, “We are bringing one of our electric scooters to India which will be basically used for the study. We will be doing a market survey and feasibility survey with this model and decide on the roadmap of future EVs of Honda in India. It’s very difficult to set the next future line-up but the survey will be starting in the next three to four months.”

In June, Honda had unveiled its prototypes CR electric dirt bike and the Benly e electric delivery scooter. Benly e electric scooter was spotted testing at the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) facility in Pune. It had made its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show 2019.

Honda Motor Company, Ltd. US unit announced in September that it is targeting the initial annual sales of 70,000 for its planned electric Prologue sport utility vehicle when it goes to market in 2024. The company plans to add additional electric vehicle models as it aims to sell a total of 500,000 electric vehicles in the United States by 2030, It aims to achieve 100% zero-emission autos gross sales in North America by 2040.
