Neste to begin selling 100% renewable diesel in Finland

Neste plans to start selling diesel produced entirely from renewable raw materials at selected stations in Finland around the turn of the year. The new product offers environmentally conscious consumers and corporate customers a sustainable and easy solution for reducing traffic-borne emissions. The majority of the renewable raw materials the company uses to refine the product, consists of waste and residues.
Neste’s proprietary NEXBTL technology makes it possible to produce top-quality renewable diesel and other renewable products out of waste and residue materials and vegetable oils. Neste conducts continuous research to further expand its portfolio of sustainably produced renewable raw materials.
In addition to its significantly smaller carbon footprint, the product is of a high quality - it burns efficiently and cleanly. It is easy to adopt, as it does not require any vehicle modifications. Moreover, you do not need to empty your tank if you want to switch from conventional diesel to this extremely climate-friendly diesel as it can be used in the vehicle in any blending ratio all the way up to 100%.

100% Neste Renewable Diesel is used in California, where it helps cities and counties to reduce traffic-related greenhouse gas emissions. Users of Neste Renewable Diesel include cities of San Francisco, Oakland, Walnut Creek, Carlsbad, and county of Sacramento. As for corporate customers, Google and UPS have also chosen to reduce their carbon footprint by using Neste Renewable Diesel. In Finland, Neste Renewable Diesel was used for producing low-emission energy for the Flow festival and Weekend Festival.
These are all cooking oils and they cost twice normal diesel and quantity available is limited. So it is no long term solution.

Neste sells HPR through Propel in California,
same price as the refined product.

I recently had reason to look into the carbon footprint (Cf) of different diesel alternatives. Using full biodiesel (B100) instead of petrodiesel can lower your Cf by 76%. But modern diesel engines have emission control equipment like diesel particulate filters (DPF) that prevent you from using more than B20 so your Cf ends up being reduced by only 15%.
Hydrogenation-derived renewable diesel (HDRD) is more chemically similar to petrodiesel so that it has no such blend wall and you can use up to R100 in any diesel engine. But the hydrogen is often sourced from natural gas so the Cf is higher than B100. By using R100 you could reduce you Cf by 65%
Neste’s proprietary NEXBTL technology uses 100% renewable feedstock AND can be used in the vehicle in any blending ratio all the way up to 100% so its Cf gets reduced by 80 to 90%.
