The resulting flexible grid usage is intended to reduce the frequency of bottlenecks in the power grid and create financial benefits for participants. In 2020 alone, about 6,200 GWh of green power had to be curtailed in Germany. The car becomes a rolling electricity storage unit for the grid operator.

ORNL’s wireless charging technology transferred power between the truck and a charging pad across the 11-inch gap using two electromagnetic coupling coils at the demonstration. The system transferred electricity from the power grid to the vehicle battery terminals at more than 92% efficiency.

Pending on a final investment decision the largest battery storage will be built at the Vattenfall wind farm Pen y Cymoedd (230 MW) in South Wales—a 22 MW storage facility, which will help to support the stability of the country-wide power grid in the UK as part of the so-called EFR (Enhanced Frequency Response) service.
