Alexander Dennis Unveils Plans For More Electric Bus Models

Alexander Dennis (Alexander Dennis Limited or “ADL”), a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. is one of the world’s leading independent global bus manufacturers. They have announced the addition of new electric bus models to their lineup. The models are fully designed and integrated in-house using the company’s expertise to expand its zero-emission portfolio.

What To Expect

A new minibus and an electric double-decker will be available for customer delivery in late 2023, complementing the highly successful products of the BYD ADL cooperation, which will continue to be sold and supported.

The move brings Alexander Dennis’ battery electric bus lineup in line with the company’s long-standing strategy of offering its own, integrated vehicles alongside buses built on the chassis of selected partners to ensure the widest range of solutions to meet customer demands.

A stunning new design language, created in-house by the company’s talented industrial designers with input from students of Coventry University‘s sector-leading Automotive and Transport Design course, will give the new models unmistakable kerb appeal and highlight their zero-emission credentials, allowing operators to make a bold statement that both underpins and highlights their clean transport investment.

Buses for the United Kingdom and Ireland will be entirely manufactured in the United Kingdom. Further information and technical details will be made available in the coming months.

The Business Model

Internationally, the new platform will be tailored to the needs of cities, transportation authorities, and operators in each region, by Alexander Dennis’ concept of offering the best answer for each market demand. Hong Kong’s recent order for Enviro 500 EV electric double-deckers will be part of this next generation of zero-emission buses.

The highly successful battery-electric BYD ADL Enviro200EV and BYD ADL Enviro400EV models developed in collaboration with BYD will remain available in the UK, Ireland, and New Zealand, providing operators with an unrivaled range of options.

The Enviro400FCEV, Alexander Dennis’ second-generation hydrogen bus, will also remain a key element of the company’s zero-emission bus portfolio and will be delivered to launch client Liverpool City Region this year. Alexander Dennis has already fully designed and integrated the model, and it shares technology and major driveline components with the incoming new battery-electric vehicles.

“Alexander Dennis continues to lead the transition to zero-emission mobility and this unparalleled investment in the latest zero-emission technology gives operators, transport authorities, and councils the freedom to choose from an even wider range of buses,” says President & Managing Director Paul Davies.

“We have always been highly respected for our product innovation, and throughout this difficult period for our industry, we have continued to challenge our engineering team to evolve our range. The result will be a brand new fully in-house designed, integrated electric double deck and small bus product giving our customers access to the latest zero-emission vehicle technology from a single, trusted source. Investments can be made safe in the knowledge that everything will continue to receive the first-class aftermarket support that we are renowned for.”
